oats

At our Wednesday evening All Mama group last week, mamas were talking about tips to boost their milk supply. Many shared that eating steel-cut oats seem to make a big difference in comparison to even rolled oats. So, I thought I would share some of my most favorite steel-cut oats recipes. The first is my husband Ethan’s recipe which is really quite simple. I’ve also provided links to my other faves. Enjoy!

Ethan’s Steel-Cut Oats

Before going to bed:
1 cup steel-cut oats
3 cups of water

Soak in medium saucepan on stove top overnight.

In the morning:
Leave oats and water as is and turn on heat to medium. Bring to boil then turn heat to low for a gentle simmer to avoid scorching and boiling over. If you leave the saucepan cover on while bringing to a boil do not step away too far, because the oats will boil over easily. If you need to step away from it, leave the lid off and add the lid once you’ve brought it to a gentle simmer.

Simmer for 15-20 minutes. Longer if you like softer oats. Drizzle some soy milk and maple syrup or sprinkle some brown sugar and dried fruit. Add some ground flax seeds to your serving, because they are also known to help boost your supply!

Serve 3-4.

Other recipes to try:

Baked Oatmeal from Nourished Kitchen (fantastic recipe if you’ve got house guests or want breakfast for the week)
Strawberry Maple Oatmeal (this calls for rolled oats, but it’s fantastic with steel cut, as well)
